Are my online bank accounts protected?

As a country with a large population of heavy Internet users, cashless mobile systems are quickly becoming the trend. Online banking is one way to maximize this digital space – cash transfers, online shopping payments, and other transactions can be done without leaving the comforts of your home.

Despite the ease of online banking and the generally high trust Filipinos have towards banks, a study done by Unisys found that Filipinos are still apprehensive with online banking. In order to use online banking functions safely, here are some tips for managing your account:

  • Turn on your notifications: If your setting for receiving notifications isn’t on yet, it’s best to turn it on now. Notifications will alert you in case suspicious transactions occurs.
  • Monitor your transactions: Always review your transaction history (or statement of accounts) – since these are logged online, you can easily see how your money comes and goes.
  • Remember to log-out: Even if you’re logging on a personal device (like a smartphone), never forget to log-out. You don’t know who can access your phone and when, so make it a habit to log-out each time.
  • Don’t trust emails from banks that ask for information: Credible banks would never request information from you through email or links, so be wary if your supposed bank asks you to update your personal data through a link!
  • Keep your app up-to-date: Keeping the app updated helps lessen the chinks in the armor, so to speak. Updates allow software developers to get rid of bugs and other minor problems that may cause issues later on.
